La Lutte

“The Struggle” of Stan Royal – Stan the Man – retired chalky – never grown a wine grape in his life – frosts, grasshoppers, droughts, bushfires – one struggle after another – only to have his own sheep get into the vineyard and eat the first great crop.

The life of a vigneron, full of uncertainty one minute and sheer joy the next. But when the seasons and nature go to plan we produce some spiffy wines.

La Lutte drinks well young, shared with friends at a picnic or BBQ, while putting your week’s struggles behind you.

90/100 (Silver): Brilliant deep purple colour. High-octane spicy/peppery, plummy and floral aromas, pure and bright and very cool-climate. Intense and bright on the palate, fresh and clean and light on its feet, so it’s easy to enjoy young, Tannins are fine and light but do their work effectively in the background. Very smart early-drinking shiraz. Best Drinking 2023 to 2032.

91/100 (Silver): Juicy cherry-berry flavours with lashings of twiggy spice. Walnut, red licorice and smoky reductive inputs too. Fun to drink but more than that too; it's textural, complex and refreshing all at once. Best drinking 2023 to 2037.

87/100 (Bronze): Herbal notes of cut grass and sage mix with watermelon and red cherries. The palate offers a fleshy burst of red berries, balanced by an integrated injection of acidity. It's up-front and thirst-quenching. Best Drinking 2025 to 2026.

91/100: The fruit for this fresh Rose hails from vineyards in Victoria. The colour is a pale, vibrant pink, while the nose gives us strawberries, florals and even what appears to be a hint of toast. The wine is seamless, well balanced, and with good, if ever-so-slightly briny acidity and a lingering finish. Very attractive drinking now and over the next couple of years.
